Researchers prove: If the mare is a correct match, the stallion’s sperm number increases.

Sometimes animals like the scent of each other; sometimes they don’t.

So-called “MHC-genes” might play a certain role in this. A research collaboration between Agroscope and the Universities of Bern, Hannover and Lausanne shows that the compatibility of genes has an influence on the male reproduction pathways in horses. If a mare is a correct genetic match for the stallion, he will significantly produce more testosterone and thus release more sperm.

You can find the publication in the renowned journal Proceedings of the royal Society from 22.04.15 here.
